Becoming Un-Westernized

A little piece of our day includes taking a trip to the deep jungles of one country or to the flooding plains of another. Here, through the biographies of missionaries, we delve into what it sometimes takes to share the love of God with people who are struggling in many ways. These brave souls risked their lives and basic needs to demonstrate that Jesus came for the remote peoples too, and that He can heal and restore them.

Many of us have been exposed to these stories since we were children in Sunday School but what I'm learning now is the importance of worldview. Oh, the "Western Way"! It is not the gospel! The gospel is the truth of the Bible, but the transference of it must be relative to the receiver! These precious missionaries left their homes with high hopes and often with an idea of what they thought was the method they'd use to share their faith. But, God had other designs for them. I love how they teach us, by their struggles, that people are diverse and cultures are diverse and that God speaks in every language!
If God is Western, then we're in big trouble; for as a culture in general, we have denied Him and no longer claim to be a Christian nation. My Kenyan friend recently told me that for many years Africans have been sending missionaries to Canada. What these biographies have taught me about worldview is that we are very biased people and God cannot be kept in a box. We must not ever deny or twist the truths in His Word but we must fight against culturally-minded thinking.

Lord, help me and my children to know You as You truly are, not through a self-made or culturally-made worldview.
