Melting Like Ice Cream

There are signs of it--small signs--but evidence, nonetheless. We squint and gaze hard out the window each morning for a promise that it's really coming. Finally, we load up in the truck and go looking for Spring. It must be out there somewhere. We figure that maybe, just maybe, if we get in the vicinity of nature, we'll have us a closer look and validate our long-awaited hope.

Upon arrival at one of our favourite spots, we notice the creek has thawed and it curves and sinks around snowy banks like warm fudge poured over a bowl of cold vanilla ice cream. A bright red cardinal cheers as if to say he sees it too, and alighting on a branch jutting out from the snow, he becomes the cherry on top in this optimistic scene. The recently silent woods is now alive with calls, squawks and twitters practicing their chorus that expectantly welcomes old friends returning from the south. On this trip, we don't catch too many more signs except that we can now step across the little boardwalk that was buried in snow like piles of whipped cream just a few weeks earlier. That's enough for us. Hope springs up inside of us and we're grateful that the melting of that sweet, white offering we'd dreamed about at Christmas, is now dripping away, revealing new, delicious gifts.

Recognizing and Receiving

We walk the pier at sunset, ice cream in hand, sand between our toes. Choppy waves crash again and again while we lick and drip and make the countdown till the glowing orb sinks below the horizon.
These are reviving times that prepare us for days to come, Spring days when Daddy won't be as available and schoolwork will be forefront. We soak these moments when creation is most obvious before us and readies us to be able to receive and recognize the not so obvious gifts.

All Jammied Up And Ready For Ice Cream

If it's true that ice cream goes straight to your hips, I should be having difficulty getting through the doorway this September. Being the final day in August, we packed up our "jammied" offspring and headed down to our favourite ice cream place. Does it look like a dive? It is. But we love it there. When we arrive at the window there is much humming and hawing over flavours but it usually ends up that everyone asks for the same ice cream every time.
Meghan is beginning to cost us some penny since she now wants a full scoop instead of a "kiddie cone", Molly remains the drippy-faced girl, Emily pats her lips with a napkin while she licks, and Oliver excitedly chats on about his while it melts away. He often passes it to me before it's half gone and declares, "I'm all done now, Mommy." Terry always enjoys his black cherry on a sugar cone and I gobble up chocolate peanut butter ice cream and even though I regret having something so filling after dinner, I can't help myself. Did I mention that I sometimes eat Oliver's leftovers?
Now, if I can write a whole post about ice cream, it must be because my friend and I officially began "eating clean" starting yesterday. Pray for me :)
