For Keeps

I folded the poem entitled "Day Twenty" and looked up, with tears brimming, at my husband of twenty years. His eyes were moist too and suddenly, twenty-five years of knowing one another culminated in this moment. Through sickness and health, through beginning with little and paying off debt, through four babies and sleepless nights, through misunderstanding and anger and passion, through fierce and protective love, through living in apathy as Christians to trying to seek God with our whole hearts, we've traversed together. Our mutual gaze was wrought with memories and a deep knowing that this is it--we're playing for keeps--and only by God's grace have we been kept.

Every evening for twenty days leading up to our anniversary, Terry had written a silly or romantic poem, coupled with a gift that signified his love for me, us, or our family. The gifts were sometimes tangible, a couple were  activities, or something he'd do for me. But, each one was thoughtfully planned out and greatly appreciated by me. He clasped my hand. Tonight was the grand finale of that anniversary planning and he desired to celebrate our forgiveness toward each other which is the beautiful act commanded by God that is part of His keeping grace we've experienced. All the gifts, all the poems and all of the thoughtfulness could not have matched the reality that our hearts were truly entwined because of our great God and His plan for us. We could see it so clearly. And celebrate we did!

She's 40

I arrived at Annie's home as a surprise from her husband. He was sending the two of us to a fancy place for the morning, complete with pedicures, facials and massages. We had a lovely lunch on the porch while my friend of nineteen years opened forty gifts from me (sorry, Annie!). It was so beyond what either of us desire, but when her husband is in charge of the party, he goes all out!

And as we lolly-gagged back to the parking lot, we both had a good laugh at what was "book-ending" her Chevette :)

Happy 40th, "Nellie"! May you always hear the Lord's voice clearly as He guides you over the next 40! (We'll roller-blade when we're 80 :)

Parties Are A Way Of Life Here

It seems that we can come up with a party for anything. Yes, this is Emily's birthday, but we're always looking for a way to celebrate life. Where there's a party, there are good friends. Where there's a party, there is cake. Where there's a party, there is laughter and joy. Next party: Valentines. See you there :)

I Don't Deserve This!

We were beginning to feel the effects of the broken furnace and so we triple covered our slumbering children in their beds. It was eleven p.m. and I was shivering. My husband stoked the fire and all I wanted to do was sleep but my clattering bones were drawn to the only soothing place in the house.
Once I had nearly burned my back right through my jammies, I felt I was ready to make the run to the bedroom and fly under the crisp covers. There, I huddled underneath, socked feet flattened between my husband's calves. My head, completely covered, was nestled into his... armpit, I think. It was dark and I didn't care... as long as I was warm. When I lost the ability to breathe, I came up for air.
The sun didn't shine the next morning... it rained... which made it even colder. One by one, my children rose from their beds, wrapped in blankets or dressed in layers of shirts and sweaters. They were good sports about it, especially because it seemed that schoolwork would have to be done around the fireplace that day. Oliver even decided that the fire might be a good way to toast his English muffin for breakfast :) Daddy did his stoking one more time before heading off to work.
But all of it got me thinking. As the goosebumps rose on my arms, I pulled the flannel blanket tighter around me, but thoughts of the homeless, wrapped only in hopelessness, invaded my mind.
What is our inconvenience is their reality!
I shuddered again, not because of my cold body but because of my frigid heart.
Our situation wasn't so bad that I asked, "Why me, Lord?" but I wondered, why don't I ever cry out to God, "I don't deserve this!" when things are going well? When Japan is facing an unfathomable crisis, why do we get to cuddle up together, each one of us accounted for?
Again, gratitude flooded this comfortable, sinful soul and I praised Him for every precious moment, every perfect gift and... every small hazard that compels me to discern how much I don't deserve the good stuff.

(Joining my two moms (one, in-law) and my aunt and their immeasurable hearts for the poor... Mom V. crochets sleeping mats for the Haitian children, my Mom knits blankets for babies left in the fields in Africa while their mothers go to work in the sex-slave-trade, and my Aunt Kathy gives to every single needy person in her life and solicits others to join her--in the gift of giving.

We, as a family, help to provide the materials for these projects but can do a little more. Is there anything you can do in your area with your kids? I want to teach my children to praise God for every blessing, not to feel entitled to the goodness they experience, and to give out of over-flowing hearts... perhaps then, I'll "get it" one day too.)

Recognizing and Receiving

We walk the pier at sunset, ice cream in hand, sand between our toes. Choppy waves crash again and again while we lick and drip and make the countdown till the glowing orb sinks below the horizon.
These are reviving times that prepare us for days to come, Spring days when Daddy won't be as available and schoolwork will be forefront. We soak these moments when creation is most obvious before us and readies us to be able to receive and recognize the not so obvious gifts.

My Gifts

Four little people who make me a Momma.
My real-life gifts!
Homemade Cards... treasures!
A painted rock... my favourite kind of gift--when a little one knows that a tiny trinket from the ground will make you happy because it's attached to the love in her heart.
Surprise talents springing up! Meghan made me this apron!
A proud Mommy displays her gift.
Afternoon melt-down... when it's really time to be a Mommy
(while my Mother foresees the appreciation of this photo and takes it during the climax of the moment).
