Under A Moonlit Sky

It was her final competition and so my mom came with us to stay at a hotel in this far away land (of Collingwood :). We marked a trail near the place we were lodging with the tracks of a scooter, our footprints, and that thing that always happens to two or more of us on a hike far from bathrooms. Sigh. However, it was a lovely little walk before an early morning of ballet.
Placing first again, we praised God for the opportunity for our daughter to excel in an area she loves. (It's prohibited to take photos during a competition so I don't have any!). Packing up the hairpins and tutu, we meandered back to the hotel so that her little spectators could enjoy a swim. Blessings in abundance.

Your Perspective Is Everything

They had been noticing how the hawk always sat perched upon the cross of our church steeple, and so my pastor and his wife watched thoughtfully one day. The idea came to Patricia that our perspective is always clearer from the cross and she mentioned the profoundness of it to her husband. A sermon was born in that moment.
Since Pastor Mills was unable to get a photo of the bird, he had his assistant find one on the Internet for him and he placed it on the large screen one Sunday for all of us to see. He quoted his wife and preached how different life looks when we view it through what Jesus did for us on the cross. It was powerful.
I was determined to see that bird in order to etch the idea in my mind for good.

One evening, a couple weeks later, I rounded the corner to the church to take my children to their rehearsal. One of them pointed and exclaimed, "Mommy, look, the hawk is on the cross right now!"

I was quite excited since I had my camera in the van with me. I pulled my vehicle in a good location and opened my door. Climbing onto the edge of the running board, I held my camera up and took a shot. Just as I did, a second hawk landed beside the first. My children cheered and I began to picture the collage of photos. What a beautiful scene the Lord had set for me to photograph. The sky was illuminated with sunset's glow, edging the clouds and now a second bird? The kids ran into the church and I left during their practice. When I returned, the second hawk had disappeared and I travelled around the church, shooting different angles. I so desired to capture that lone hawk in flight! I held my camera up for quite some time and it wouldn't move. I silently prayed, Lord, this is Your bird. Please call to it and make it fly. I felt a little silly asking such a request but why not? Immediately, the hawk fluffed up it's wings and flew away. I praised God! How fun :)

I was able to create a framed collage for Pastor Mills and Patricia to show them how inspired I was by the truth of these words. And as I read Ann Voskamp's post for today, I am reminded once again that joy is always possible because, "Joy is the fruit of gratitude. And gratitude is rooted in perspective."

Gratitude:

1216. moments in creation that take my breath away
1217. the joy of being able to capture this gift to give it away
1218. that it truly is possible to have joy, no matter what my circumstance is, if I only have gratitude
1219. that there truly is always something to be grateful for
1220. although it's been a couple of weeks of entitlement and spoiled children, they just might be catching onto the gratitude thing
1221. how they're all reading incessantly
1222. how she feels her ILS class is making her so much smarter
1223. how my non-reader now wants the fattest of books just so she can say she's read them :)
1224. how I'm running out of spare change for hot chocolate dates with my readers who've completed their books
1225. the way she sweeps onto the stage in the Wizard of Oz play and blows us away with her confidence
1226. the way my other girl memorized her lines immediately
1227. the way she uses her dancing skills on the stage as the Cowardly Lion
1228. the way he keeps asking me, "We're just doing this for fun, right, Mommy?"
1229. how I said I didn't want to join this play this year and how God just brings details together so that we remain connected to people I believe He wants to our lives
1230. more items wrapping up for the school year
1231. how my sister-in-law had a tumor removed this week from her brain and continues to joke about getting her hair shampoo'd
1232. how her spirit is beginning to enliven again
1233. the success of the surgery
1234. how family rallies around when they're most needed
1235. the forgiveness and grace of a friend I messed up with (the tongue is unruly, I tell you!)
1236. the way he loves his new model airplane (that would be my BIG boy)

She's 40

I arrived at Annie's home as a surprise from her husband. He was sending the two of us to a fancy place for the morning, complete with pedicures, facials and massages. We had a lovely lunch on the porch while my friend of nineteen years opened forty gifts from me (sorry, Annie!). It was so beyond what either of us desire, but when her husband is in charge of the party, he goes all out!

And as we lolly-gagged back to the parking lot, we both had a good laugh at what was "book-ending" her Chevette :)

Happy 40th, "Nellie"! May you always hear the Lord's voice clearly as He guides you over the next 40! (We'll roller-blade when we're 80 :)

Come To The Carnival

She couldn't contain herself. She'd been counting down for weeks when the day of her party finally arrived and her giggles spilled over like the bubblebath I bought her. Her friends and cousins numbered ten--just the number she turned (plus one little brother). I threw a carnival together that morning and she and the other kids spent the afternoon running from activity to activity earning tickets (cooperatively) for their goodie bag items.
Wet Sponge Toss
Emily--Ticket Master :)
Clothespin Drop
Ping-Pong Squirt
Things got a little wet :)
Searching for buried treasure.
Eureka!
Nursery visit to search for particular staff (who have tickets hidden in their pockets!).
Found you, Aunt Leanne!
Found you, Cousin Nicole!
Found you, Cousin Kaitlyn!
Best Girls :)

Happy Birthday, my lovely little lady! You are a gentle, precious soul and Daddy and I love you very much.
May God bless you abundantly as you serve Him daily.

Thirteen

When we arrived at the skate park Meg reminded me that we hadn't taken her thirteen year-old photo shoot yet and that this was the place she wanted it done. What better location than a big, metal bowl plastered in graffiti? Who better to join her than her cousins who bless her life so abundantly with their spunky personalities? So I lifted my camera again and again to capture the "regular", good fun these kids always have when they're together. And the photos? To celebrate this amazing girl's thirteen years of life.
And as I turn the lens and focus, dropping it round my neck only to laugh hard at their antics, I'm taken with my big girl. She somehow grew up before my busy eyes and I feel like I gave birth to her yesterday. Now we share shoes and jokes and dreams we had the night before but she's still my baby. I can see that toddler in the concentrated look in her face, but also the woman in her dancing eyes. How can both exist at once? I suppose, only in a way a mother can see. I'm thankful the camera stops time, at least for a small moment.
Meg, you're a rare and beautiful girl. You are diligent and funny and so very responsible. I can hardly keep up with your rapid changes but even though they draw me back to memories of your childhood, I appreciate your development into a lovely God's girl (I know you aren't fond of the words, young woman just yet :)
May you always desire to seek Jesus' face in all you do. I love you, my sweet daughter.

My Surprise

Thanks, Meg, for making me a new header without me knowing! Wow, lovely :)

A Marriage Without Obstacles

He didn't call to say he was going to be late.

She's been saying she has a headache again.

He won't lead spiritually.

She is nagging about everything.

Does your marriage have obstacles? Do you pray for unity and peace only to encounter more selfishness and pride in your relationship? Do you wish your marriage was more Christ-like? Here is the story of a couple who is an example of the purest form of love in a marriage--a marriage with major obstacles, but one in which Christ's love is being demonstrated in greater ways than you can imagine. Perhaps their journey will inspire us to greater heights of selflessness in our homes.
