Day Eleven (of 31 Days)

Snuggling up with pen in hand, I write out blessings, naming them one by one. They leap off the page at me like fireworks that can't be ignored and my lips curl into a smile. You can't be down when you're bubbling with gratitude for your undeserved and bountiful blessings. It's a way of drawing close--this thankfulness. It's recognizing where all the goodness comes from, that the goodness is only lavished on us because of the overwhelming grace of God. Drawing close with thankfulness...
487. for my beautiful, fun-loving extended family

488. for "girl-talk" between mom and sisters

489. for the men who took all the kids for a Thanksgiving Day walk

490. for my boy who tells me he goes to the grocery store with me so I won't get lost

491. for friendships with women and the weekend with one in particular at the Women Of Faith conference

492. for Autumn and what it brings to all five senses

493. for cousin-love

494. for my two nephews who tore out my laundry room floor so it wouldn't cost so much to get professionals--thanks

495. for an amusing cat who is more on a schedule than any of us and calls the children to bed every night at the same time

496. for laughter in abundance, especially at the conference--such good medicine!

497. for the Holy Spirit's conviction to be a better wife, mom and friend after hearing the speakers there

498. for the freeze-dried ice cream I tried (how fun!)... haven't seen that in Canada!

499. for sweet memories spoken of Mama and Grampie that caused my sisters, mom and I to burst into tears all at once

500. for drawing close this month and how it's going to create in me a clean heart

"A thankful heart is a peaceful heart", my pastor declared this Sunday.

Have you penned your gratitude list lately?

Day Ten (of 31 Days)

I walk the rows of tall stalks that scuff and sweep each other in the wind. Kernels of gold peek out through brown silk and present their harvest-readiness. I run my hands along the rows as I pick up speed. Running through the corn field I savour the scent of His sweet earth beneath my Sunday flats, dry, crisp stalks slapping against my legs. Slowing to a walk I gaze up at feathery plumes backed against the rich blue sky. I have only a few minutes, but He meets me in the beauty of His creation. I stand in wonder. The earth is the Lord's and all it's fullness... (Psalm 24:1a)
Drawing close today in the awe-inspiring, glorious, God-filled outdoors. Won't you join me? Take your Bible with you and a journal and pen. Listen. Listen really closely to what He whispers through His creation.

Day Nine (of 31 Days)

Ten thousand women gathered in New York this weekend to praise the Lord and to hear stories of healing and redemption from several fabulous speakers, singers and a dramatist. We laughed until we cried and cried until we could do nothing else but laugh. We were able to draw close to God in a rare and special way--in the presence of so many hungry female believers. This month, consider joining a girlfriend in "drawing close". Whether it be in prayer or devotions, find someone with whom you can share your October journey. God has promised His presence where two or more are gathered.
On this Canadian Thanksgiving Day, I'm so grateful to have been part of such a gathering. If you ever have the opportunity to go, the conference is held all over the U.S. Here is the website.. http://www.womenoffaith.com/ .

Day Eight (of 31 Days)

There's an old song that Larnelle Harris sings and it goes like this,

I miss My time with you
Those moments together
I want to be with you each day
And it hurts Me when you say you're too busy
Busy trying to serve Me
But how can you serve Me
When your spirit's empty?
There's a longing in my heart
Wanting more than just a part of you
It's true, I miss My time with you

I cringe when I think of the possibility that God sees this excuse in me. Drawing close means that I'll miss my time with Him. I desire to get back to the place where I can't wait to be on my knees. How terribly tragic that I can ebb and flow in my relationship with Him. Making it my life's goal to be more consistent in this is nothing less than an understanding of the greatest need I have as a human created in His image. Is the desire for drawing close beginning to emerge in you? Are you missing Him if you don't set aside the time? The obedience will become the desire. I want calloused knees!
Today, let's read Philippians 1 (especially verse six).

Day Seven (of 31 Days)

Scripture. The life blood of our faith. HIS Word. Who HE is. What He requires from us. How He feels about us. Where our future lies. If this is all true, if we need it like we need breath, it must permeate our very being. Memorize it, savour it, feast on it. The persecuted church all over this groaning earth, gives it's life for this Book to be in its possession, while in North America, we allow our 3 copies per home to gather dust. This is encouragement today to choose a passage to hide in your heart. His Word promises a deep saturation will help us to not sin against Him.
(Thanks, Bethany.)

Day Six (of 31 Days)

Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. I Timothy 4:12-16
When I had just turned thirty, I was approached by my pastor's wife to be one of the teachers at our Ladies' Bible Study on Tuesday mornings. I was surprised and humbled that it would be offered to me. I taught the ladies, along with a few other women, for a few years and then I took some time off for homeschooling. I felt very inadequate during that time and knew that even though the Lord was using what I was teaching, I had so much more to learn. Eight years later, my eyes fill with tears as I look back at the unbelievable, and often, painful lessons I had to learn in the years that followed.
This Scripture, from I Timothy, speaks profoundly to me. Although I am not young, compared to some, the point of this passage for me is the urgency of keeping myself immersed in the Word and in applying it daily to my life. I'm thoroughly convicted particularly by this portion... "Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them that your progress might be evident to all." Whoa. What do you think of that? Do you believe you will be different by the end of October? Obviously, the goal is to continually draw closer to God throughout our lifetime but, I'm expecting to be changed by His presence in this time set apart with you. Today, try to find some quiet time to seek His face. Have you ever laid prostrate before Him and honouring Him by focusing your thoughts on His majesty? I am loving this way of "entering His gates" before I pour out my heart's cry. I'd love to know how you are "drawing close".

We Heart Autumn

I love that this season has two names. Whichever you're in the mood for, it rolls off your tongue so nicely :) As the trees show off their new colours and my children exclaim of their beauty around every corner we drive or walk, I praise God for this extra time with them. Homeschooling allows for so many wonder-filled moments as a family and I wouldn't trade it. Even on difficult days, my eyes are opened to the gift I have in pointing out the Lord's goodness and creativity every minute I have.
Now, to work on them seeing His goodness in me!
The downside to homeschooling is that they witness every mood of mine--good and bad--and experience the times I fail them. This can also be an upside if I use the Lord's guidance as a lesson for them to see my humanness and how He molds me. So, as I change along with the season this month, I pray that it will be noticed by my children and that they'll understand how the Almighty Creator of the earth is interested in the state of our hearts.
Blowing through straws to create unique trees

That's right, we don't suck it up, we blow out.

Celebrating Fall means a whole week of art and reading about Thanksgiving :)

And singing, "Praise God from Whom all blessings flow..."

Dabbing colourful leaves with a cotton swab.

Talking about God's care for His creation.

Enjoy every minute of Autumn/Fall!

Day Five (of 31 Days) Groping For God

Weariness or sadness causes me to grope around like a blindfolded person searching for some safety and stability to hold onto, reaching, ever-reaching for something solid to anchor this drifting heart. Alternately, my busy, joy-filled days sometimes cause me to ignore the One who gave His life that I might obtain peace. As this wavering child seeks to obey, this October, I once again begin to rise early and come into His presence before the children awake. "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." James 4:8. I've had this memorized my whole life and yet it is such a profound truth. I read this morning, "...they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being..." (Acts 17:27,28) Groping. It connotes a strong desire and a desperate searching. Let's draw near this month together with obedience and fervency. Read Acts 17:24-28 or the whole book, if you're able!

Support For The Body

Yesterday, my new friend who works at a lovely little spa in town, stayed late for me so I could have a pedicure and brow wax. I'm not really the spa-going kind of girl but I do love the pampering from time to time. I had prayed that I would be able to bless my friend, who is going through a difficult time; I thought a listening ear would be just what she needed. At the end of the treatment, she told me that it was no charge. Of course, I objected and was quite prepared to pay her, but she would have none of it! I was overwhelmed by her generosity. That saved me over $55. She squeezed me and told me she wanted to bless me!
When I returned home, I began to think of how I could bless her and it occurred to me that this is exactly what the Lord desires from us. He asks His children to do unto others as we would have them to unto us. It's a reciprocal blessing, one that keeps giving. Paying it forward and back again, if you will. However, the Christian's action is to shine the love of Jesus. We need to shine His light to an unsaved world but we also need to support and take care of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
In the nursery business, there is much competition but we have friends who will shop nowhere else because they desire to honour the stand we take on being closed on Sundays. Likewise, my husband and I try to use Christian tradespeople for jobs that we need done around the house. Who do you support in your community? Are you reserving your support for your fellow believers? We need to strengthen the circle of Christian businesses and help each other to do well. Why would we put our hard-earned money toward secular commerce first? If you know someone who is doing their best to serve the Lord and is taking a Christian stand in this tough and competitive environment, prayerfully consider offering your patronage to them before looking elsewhere.
Speaking of business, there's so much that women can do to help provide for their families in more ways than laundry and cooking or even working outside the home. Read Proverbs 31 today (starting at verse 10, even if you know it well) and discover how God wants us to bless our families and those in need around us. Ask Him to show you if you're missing where your support should be.

Day Four (of 31 Days)

Monday, October 5--Being thankful is a choice that changes one's daily outlook on life. On Mondays, I join the Gratitude Community to share with others and to be held accountable. The body of Christ is so necessary to remain strong in the faith. Being this close to Thanksgiving makes it even more important to rejoice in the little things that are ultimately blessings... blessings that may be ignored by us if we don't look really hard. Read Psalm 100 out loud today and rejoice! If you're not part of the Gratitude Community, take a minute now and then throughout the day to jot down reasons to be thankful, no matter how small. Notice how the frustrations that seem so big, begin to fade with all that thankfulness :)

470. thankful for the way my husband uncovers my feet in the morning (he knows I like it)

471. for crisp, fall days

472. for fresh, clean children on a Sunday morning

473. for our new favourites, J.J. Heller and Andrew Peterson

474. for mums in my planters at the front door

475. for various coloured and shaped pumpkins (God really is creative)

476. for the underground railroad (we're learning about it)

477. for the Women Of Faith conference (can't wait!)

478. for our Mediterranean restaurant in town (one of my favourites)

479. for library visits

480. for neighbour visits

481. for inspiring kids' movies that make my husband and I end up crying (Secrets Of Jonathan Sperry)

482. for our precious kids we sponsor, Sifuniso and Linley (praying for you!)

483. for the hope of good news for our friends' Ethiopian adoption visa going through this week

484. for fantastic books we've so enjoyed from our local thrift store

485. for early bedtime for me (seriously, as I'm typing this, my husband is asking if I want to watch a movie! Is there hope for me? lol!)

486. for answered prayer to a situation that is so vital to our future (praise God!)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16

Day Three (of 31 Days)

Sunday, October 3--This morning, I made a mistake that cost me peace and order in my family; I ignored the nudging of the Holy Spirit. It was clear, although quiet and easy to push away when I had a strong urge to speak my mind on a particular issue with my husband. Note to self: not giving in to your own selfish desires, Heather, actually causes you to win in the end... in the most satisfying way.
As it turns out, I tend to do this in other areas as well because later, out of more selfish ambition, I loaded up my plate with a massive piece of chocolate cake. I love cake and I'm ashamed to say, I could put away a whole birthday cake single-handedly. I dug around the drawer for just the right fork. Do you have to drink tea from a particular tea cup because it fits around your lips, "just so"? Well, I was salivating as I was seeking my small, rounded, cake fork because I really wanted the whole experience to be just perfect. But, upon the first bite of what I thought would be rich, dense, moist, chocolatey goodness, I nearly gagged! What a horrible disappointment! I pushed the whole thing as far from me as I could get it. My immediate response? Thank You, Lord, that that cake tasted so bad! I felt, in a sense, saved from my own gluttony.
Oh, how I wish I would exercise some self-control! As in the case with my husband, it would save me much grief! As my self-righteous words tumbled out all over the bathroom floor, this morning, they left a bad taste. If only I would push the plate away before I take a bite. There's probably a reason why the Lord recently led me to the Scripture, "I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress." Psalm 17:3 (in more ways than one, apparently). Here, David is vindicated because he has kept his mouth pure. Read Psalm 17 today. Is there anything you see in there that you're not doing as he did? David says he will be satisfied when he awakes in the likeness of God. My prayer is to become more and more like Him as I follow the Holy Spirit's call to shut my mouth.

31 Days To Drawing Closer to God

I am so blessed to be a part of the blog world. I am amazed by the women I have "met" online; their courage, humility and inspiring ideas have encouraged me time and again. The Lord is undeniably using so many willing women to do His work by drawing others to Him through their writing. One such woman writes here. As I share my journey, I pray that I too, would raise an awareness in women that a personal relationship with the Creator is not only fulfilling, but essential for our survival. How anyone can venture through this life with it's mountains and valleys without God, is beyond me.
On the lighter side of the blog world, eight women offer practical and lovely tips for making this life just a little easier and our homes a little more beautiful. They began October 1st and have promised to give us a month of ideas. They can be followed here. With all of the fantastic articles I've been reading so far as these women prepared to get their blogs ready for October, I have decided to draw closer to God throughout this month and would love for you to join me. I write, not because I have anything profound to offer, but so that we may grow on this journey together. And in keeping with my ever-undisciplined nature, I am one day late in beginning. Now you know one of my prayers for change--to stop procrastinating :) So without further adieu, I offer October 1st and 2nd in this post.
Friday, October 1st--Yesterday, I struggled with a load of burdens and a pile of laundry. I even told my husband I felt like a failure to him, my children and my God. What better way to start this month of drawing close to Him than with a broken and contrite spirit? Do you ever feel this way? Let's pray today for the Lord to reveal His truth in this area to us... that He loves us with an everlasting love. And, let's ask Him to help us really believe it! Make a prayer list of the areas you know the Lord needs to do a work in you. Give them to Him and expect a real change this month. Read Jeremiah chapter 29 today.
Saturday, October 2--Today, my mom and niece participated in the Ride for Refuge. The two of them have such a passion to free little girls trapped in the sex-slave trade in Cambodia and elsewhere. I found myself pushing the thoughts of what this is really all about from my mind. I wanted to just get through my day, sponsor their efforts and say a little prayer for good biking weather. How did I get to this place of such complacency? I know the Lord does not want me overwhelmed by the horrors in this world while I am teaching my children daily. However, I must allow myself to stop and think and feel. I owe it to God, my children and those who are suffering to hurt deeply enough to be moved to do something! What is homeschooling for if we can't weep for the lost and tortured of this world in front of our children and engage them in prayer and other practical solutions?
On this second day, why not consider asking God to reveal where you can be used in some one's life today? It may be abroad or close to home but there's a need He wants you to fill. Then, do something about it!
Read Psalm 139.

The Funeral

It was unexpected. We didn't even know he was ill. We watched him throughout the day and oh, the tears... I can't begin to tell you how many tears were shed over him as he slipped away from us. When that moment arrived, when we all knew it was the end, the funeral arrangements began. Because of the obvious sorrow, I stepped back and allowed the children to do their own thing, planning and organizing, carrying furniture out of the house and dressing themselves "appropriately". Terry and I didn't know what to expect as we were asked to attend the memorial.

We were each asked to say a few words about Jack, to share a memory. We obliged. It was easy because we all had experienced some memorable moment with him.

Terry was a little over the top but I think it seemed sincere.

Meghan, being the most heart-broken, shared her feelings about the life that Jack had lived.

We all paid our respect before the burial.

Oliver said, "He was beeeautiful."

We gathered around and said our goodbyes to our beloved fish and Terry lowered him into the ground.

There were even real tears (mostly because of her part of the funeral being overlooked--which was quickly remedied... thankfully).

Molly, the ever-lovin' snacker, passed out treats she had collected from the cupboards as "funeral refreshments".
As we dragged chairs along the grass and tidied up the remains of the ceremony, Terry thought he'd just throw a thought out there into the thick, somber air... "Wanna go pick out some new fish later on?"
Emily jumped up, nearly knocking her brother over and squealed, "Yes! Oh, yes! You're the best Daddy ever! Let's go!" She grabbed onto my husband's leg, giggling. He squeezed her small frame and replied laughing, "Well, you grieve quickly!"

Here is what Meghan posted on her own private blog (just to give you her perspective)...

Yes, the title says it, we had a funeral. Not your typical funeral where you go to a funeral home and then to the grave site and there are dozens of people, but one right in our own backyard. With the tractor running, and the customers walking around at the nursery possibly glancing through the giant windows every now and then into our backyard to see what we're doing. We had set up benches out onto the grass all somewhat circling the place where we will say our speeches, and I had made a {quite lousy} sign that hung on one piece of string tied to the two pillars of the under deck.

Daddy came home for lunch and that was our cue to get into our black dresses and other black clothing for the boys {although most didn't put black on just because}. Daddy fetched the dead smelly body from the garage and put it in a box. We all trotted out side one of us holding the box carefully. We placed the box down on the grass with the benches all around. We sat. It was my turn to say something that we liked about the fish or a memory that we will keep forever. After we all had a turn, we walked under the sign and under the deck. We buried him right where we will bury our other animals when they die. {Of course we already had other deaths of animals, but it wasn't until today that Molly had her great idea of having a funeral}.

We placed the bottom of our old deck table over the spot where we buried him so that wild animals will smell the dead fish but through a fit not being able to get at it. After this we sang "From the Rising Of the Sun". Molly had brought some treats out so we had them.It was a beautiful day with coloured leaves, and pink blossoms scattered where we were having the funeral {not planned at all!} The breeze gently blew our hair and cooled our necks. Perfect weather for a funeral.

Jack, we will all miss you dreadfully. Even though you are a fish, you were like a friend to me. When I sat on the leather couch beside the aquarium read my Bible, you would always watch with curiosity and wonder. Even though we are to get dozens of new colourful fish in our aquarium now to keep Twinkle Twinkle happy, no one could replace you. We will miss you even though we were waiting until we could get more fish because the lady said you would eat them all.

Love, Meghan Grace

Something Interesting?

Twelve year-old Sydney, from this blog, has graciously given me this award. She says that I must tell you seven things about myself in order to accept the award. Since I can't think of seven interesting things above and beyond all the stuff I always journal about on this blog, I thought I'd ask my family if they could think of anything. Here's what they said:

1 .Meghan said, "You always kiss in front of us." (well, you know what that inspired me to do... :)

2. Terry said, "You like your feet uncovered when you wake up in the morning." (yep, and you do it for me, Babe)

3. Molly said, "You stand like a flamingo when you're baking and in conversations with Monique (neighbour)." (all my life, I'm afraid!)

4. Emily said, "You're pretty." (that's my 5 year-old, bless her)

5. Oliver said, "You be nice to me." (I'm glad you think so after the discipline tonight :)

6. Meghan said more, "You read stories, take pictures and sing in a different way." (Hmmm... what exactly does that mean?)

7. Molly said more, "You make us guess where we're going in the van." (Guess where we're going tomorrow? It's my little secret.)

So there you are :) Thanks for staying tuned.
